xTool PS/PS2 CO2 55W Laser Engraver/ Cutter with 2 Cameras!

By July 14, 2025December 3rd, 2025CNC, DIY, How-To, Laser

xTools medium sized laser machine is the P2S 55W CO2 laser engravers / cutters.  I have the original (now retired) P2.  The P2S is the better version (same price) with many great improvements. It’s faster, includes a magnetic internal prefilter, A higher output air assist pump and has a pop out fan cartridge for easier cleaning.

Packaging

For the weight and size of the unit, it arrived extremely well packed and undamaged.  All the parts and accessories were tucked neatly into a foam cocoons and arrived in perfect condition.  The unit was strapped and the box had corner protection.

Assembly

The only “assembly” required is adding distilled water and a coolant mixture to the internal tank.  The process requires removing several screws so you can remove the top rear cover.  The manual has a ratio chart for the coolant/distilled water mixture.  The ratio is based of of water temperature climate the machine will be used in.  Since my shop is not a conditioned space but I live in the south, I went with a 20% mix just for a safety margin.  If you use straight water, and the ambient temperature drops below freezing, you risk cracking the laser tube or worse.

I also have the riser base with the P2 and it’s assembly was very straightforward as well.  I do recommend having someone to help you lift the machine to its home and onto the riser base, if you get it,  as the P2/P2S has some gravity and size to it.

Safety

Lasers can cause serious and permanent damage.  Read and follow all the safety warnings.  As a basic rule, don’t look at the laser light at all, make sure what you’re cutting won’t give off toxic fumes (like PVC, ABS, Epoxies, etc.), Use only in an extremely well ventilated space and don’t stare at the beam.  Safety is your responsibility.

Fume Extraction

I setup a fume extraction system with a 6″ inline fan, some 6″ ducting and a 6″ blast gate. I connect my fan to the exhaust from the P2 and it works well.  The fan pulls from the enclosure and vents to the outside.  the blast gate is used to allow fresh air in from the outside (well away from the exhaust) so that the fan has the ability to exhaust the fumes freely.

Software

I use the xTool Creative Suite (XCS) with all my xTool products.  It has matured greatly since it was first released and it has all most all the things I need to be productive.  Using XCS also allows you to get the most out of your xTool products like the auto focus and camera alignment.  You can use Lightburn for many of the xTool machines but you’ll be unable to do the advanced and AI feature of XCS.

Summary

This machine is a beast!  The ample laser power gives you lots of room to be creative and productive very quickly.  Unlike diode based and fiber lasers, the xTool P2/P2S CO2 machines are acrylic cutting and engraving masters.  The in-line air-assist makes makes getting better results easy.  The clean lines, precision and quality make it feel refined and finished.
